Uvira

Uvira, on the north-western shore of Lake Tanganyika, is the city where CERC was born in 2017 and where its office is. This map shows the city as OpenStreetMap’s contributors describe it: its neighbourhoods, from Kalundu to Kavimvira, its rivers, its roads, its schools and its services.

Uvira and CERC

A city between the hills and the lake

Uvira is home to over half a million people between deforested hills and Lake Tanganyika. In heavy rain, the bare slopes hold no water: the Kalimabenge, Mulongwe and Kavimvira rivers overflow.

Where the Integrity Clubs began

In December 2017, CERC launched its first Integrity Clubs in 20 secondary schools of Uvira. Students learned to monitor their schools and to get the problems they found fixed. The clubs spread from there to the Ruzizi plain, Bukavu and Kinshasa.
